Assam: Public Dissatisfied Over Road Construction Quality

HAMREN: Road connectivity across the country is developing at a very fast pace and new regions are gradually being added to the network but the conditions of the roads in several parts of the state remain pathetic, and even the newly constructed roads fail to meet the expectations of the people.

The residents of the West Karbi Anglong have expressed dissatisfaction over the quality of the roads built. They have also alleged that large-scale corruption has taken place over the creation of these basic infrastructures. They pointed out that on the very next day after its opening, the top layer of the newly constructed road in scaling off.

The short stretch of road was constructed very recently to connect the Japan Hanse village to the Mukhim village of the district. The public has alleged the use of very low-quality materials for the construction of this project has led to this kind of incident. And this development has triggered a sharp reaction from the local people who have demanded an investigation into the matter and punishment for all the responsible people. It remains to see of the state government pays heed to the demands of the public.

Deteriorating road conditions affect various aspects of daily life in Assam. Firstly, the safety of road users is compromised as potholes, uneven surfaces, and collapsed sections increase the likelihood of accidents. The risk of injuries and fatalities due to road accidents rises significantly when road maintenance is neglected.

In addition to the dangers they present, deteriorating roads also impede transportation and hamper economic growth. The inefficient movement of goods and services leads to increased delivery times, higher transportation costs, and ultimately affects the competitiveness of businesses operating in the region. Furthermore, the poor road conditions deter potential investors from establishing their businesses in Assam, which, in turn, negatively impacts employment opportunities and economic development.

The inadequate road infrastructure in Assam also affects the quality of life for its residents. Commuters endure longer travel times, increased vehicle maintenance costs, and uncomfortable rides due to the continuous bumps and vibrations caused by poor road conditions. Additionally, the lack of proper connectivity hampers access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and emergency response.
